Today is a day that almost didn’t happen. As I’ve written about before, at one point during the process of writing SOME KIND OF HATE I was so depressed and discouraged with myself and with everything that was going on in the world around me that I told my husband maybe I should pay back the advance and give up.
Ted Lasso saved me. As I often tell my writing mentees, so much of finishing a book is about finding different ways to trick your brain so that you keep going. Having a supportive partner helps. For me, exercise helps. Having a supportive writing community helps. Getting outside and walking the dogs helps. Getting together with friends away from the screen helps.
It’s important to remember that what works for one book doesn’t always work for the next, so it’s important to constantly add new ones to your writer’s toolbox.
What are some of your mental tricks? Share in the comments - you’ll never know who you might help.
Using pretty much every mental trick in my arsenal, I persevered. I soldiered through the dark forest where all seemed lost, through a very intense “dark night of the soul” and came out the other side.
AND TODAY, SOME KIND OF HATE IS OUT IN THE WORLD!

As with all of my novels, my deepest hope for SKOH is that it helps start conversations. I don’t claim to know all the answers. I recognize that I’m a product of my age and upbringing, and I have to continue to learn and grow. But if my work helps us to think about and have conversations about the questions, then as Lena Lamont said in Singing in the Rain:
My last book, #DEEPFAKE, came out in Fall 2020. As I’m sure you can imagine, there wasn’t much celebrating going on then. While we’re still fighting new variants of Covid, thanks to science and vaccines it’s safer to have an in-person event now. Thanks to the wonderful Pia Ledina, I’ll be celebrating the launch of SOME KIND OF HATE this Sunday, 11/6/2022, at Turning the Page Books. You can sign up here to attend either virtually or in-person.
Best of all, THERE WILL BE SHORTBREAD! I’ll be making Ted Lasso’s Biscuits with the Boss, which are delish. Unfortunately, the shortbread is only for the in-person folks until we manage to achieve Willy Wonka’s ability to transport food through a screen.
HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!!
SOME KIND OF HATE is out in the world!
Congratulations Sarah!!
