Sarah goes "Once more unto the breach, dear friends"
Some of you may know that I was an op-ed columnist for 13 years. I started writing regularly for the Hearst CT newspapers in 2003. For a while I wrote for both Hearst and the online news site, CTNewsJunkie.com. I stopped writing political opinion in 2017, because the vitriol and antisemitism was affecting the mindspace I needed to preserve to write fiction.
It’s been interesting to go back and read some of the stuff I wrote 20 years ago and see how it’s held up. For example, Three examples for us all, from November 2003, is even more relevant now, as we see state legislatures passing bills to whitewash history, and other offensive ridiculousness, like that enslaved people benefitted from on the job skills training.
Or this one from Patriotism of the heart, not lapel, in which I asked what it means to be a “patriot,” a question I explored further in my 2019 novel ANYTHING BUT OKAY.
That column resulted in this letter to the editor, which I still have hanging over my desk all these years later, because it gives me courage.
It’s time — maybe even past time— for me to use that voice again.
But I realize not everyone who wants to read my bookish and writing related posts wants is interested in my political thoughts and analysis - hence the new publication, RealSaramerica, which is named after my old political columnist handle on the Muskian Hellspace Formerly Known as Twitter.
If you ARE interested in receiving those posts, however, you can sign up here. Hope to see you there!
